Additional: Robert W. Barnes, 76, 430 W. North St., St. Marys, died at 6:07 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital in St. Marys. He was born Oct. 30, 1924, in Covington, Ky., the son of William and Grace (Arnott) Barnes. On May 12, 1951, he married Melva Graff, who died April 10, 1997. Survivors include a son, Kist Charles Barnes of Rockford; a daughter, Deborah Vanderhorst (and fiancé Kevin Tobias) of St. Marys; and two granddaughters, Sara Vanderhorst and Stacy Vanderhorst, both of St. Marys. He was preceded in death by a brother, George Barnes. Mr. Barnes, formerly of Cincinnati, moved to St. Marys in 1979. He was retired from the American Laundry Manufacturing Co. in Cincinnati, where he was a welding foreman. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in the Sixth Artillery Division in Europe and Africa during World War II. He received five Bronze Stars. He was a member of Eagles Lodge Aerie 767 and a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9289, Disable American Veterans Post 119 and American Legion Post 323, all in St. Marys. He enjoyed fishing and playing cards. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Miller Funeral home in St. Marys with the Rev. John Wine officiating. Burial will follow at Elm Grove Cemetery in St. Marys, where graveside military rites will be conducted jointly by the American Legion and VFW. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, where the American Legion and VFW will conduct a joint memorial service at 7 p.m.
