Additional: Donald J. Ahlers, 76, New Bremen, died at 6:15 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, at his home after an extended illness. He was born June 20, 1924, in New Bremen, the son of Ferd and Bertha (Wietholter) Ahlers. On April 10, 1954, he married Elsie Fogt, who survives. Other survivors include four daughters, Sheree (Gary) Topp of New Bremen, Cathy Ahlers of Sidney, Tammy (Curt) McCullough of St. Marys and Donna (Mark) Shelby of New Knoxville; two sisters, Alberta (Max) Laffer of St. Marys and Deloris Rasor of Piqua; two brothers, Eugene (Edna) Ahlers of St. Marys and Richard (Lucille) Ahlers of Bradenton, Fla.; and six grandchildren. Mr. Ahlers was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ, American Legion Post 241 and Home Benefit Association, all of New Bremen. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He retired in 1989 after 33 years with Tranco Sales and Service in New Bremen. For the past 10 years, he was a courier for the First National Bank of New Bremen. He was also an avid gardener, and he created and cared for the flower gardens on the west edge of New Bremen for a number of years. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the German Protestant Cemetery with the Rev. Jeanne Spoor officiating. Mr. Ahlers' body has been cremated. Gilberg-Hartwig Funeral Home of New Bremen is handling arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the Church memorial fund or the New Bremen Emergency Squad.
