Additional: New Knoxville, April 19- The Rev. William A. Settlage, age 72, retired pastor of the Reformed church, died at 11:50 o'clock Friday morning at the memorial hospital where he was under treatment for an acute heart ailment. He had been bedfast for the last two weeks but had been ailing for some time. Until very recently the Rev. Mr. Settlage had continued in service as a substitute pastor for the Evangelical-Reformed churches in this neighborhood, and was in popular demand as a speaker at church organization meetings in his native village of New Knoxville, and in New Bremen and St. Marys as well as other points. He had served as substitute pastor of the First Evangelical Reformed church during the interval beween the pastorates of Dr. O.B. Moor and Dr. D.A. Bode, the present minister of the local church, and was always a helpful and willing servant of the congregation, gladly giving of his time and efforts toward its furtherance. The Rev. Mr. Settlage was a son of the late Fred E. and Mary E. Wierwille Settlage and was born in Washington township on January 15, 1868. He attended the New Bremen High School, then continued his education at the Mission House Academy, College and Seminary in Plymouth, Wis. Following his ordination in 1895 as a pastor of the Reformed church he served congregations in Potter, Wis., Spencerville, Kenton, Marion, Bluffton, Buffalo, N.Y., Indianapolis, Ind., Lindsay, O., Cochranton, Pa., Salem, St. Louis, Mo. He served too for a period as financial secretary of the Home for the Aged at Bascomb, O. During his long years in the ministry the Rev. Mr. Settlage gained a large acquaintance and there was widespread sorrow at the word of his death. In 1895, the Rev. Mr. Settlage married Magdalene E. Fledderjohann whose death occurred in 1921. Three children were born to them. Miss Phoebe Settlage, Cottey College. Mo., Dr. Arnold Settlage, Worthington, O., and Victor Settlage, whose death occurred in 1919. In 1923 he married Alice Mueller, dean of women at Bluffton College, who is left to mourn his death. One daughter, Mary Elizabeth, at home, was born to them. Surviving the Rev. Mr. Settlage in addition to his wife and three children are a brother, Lewis H. Settlage, St. Marys R.R., and two sisters, Mrs. Magdalene Hilgeman, Bay City, Mich., and Mrs. Sophia Buckloh, who resides with Lewis Settlage. There is one grandson, Robert Settlage. Friends may call at the Vornholt Funeral Home, New Bremen, anytime Sunday afternoon or evening to view the Rev. Mr. Settlage's body. It will be removed at 10:30 o'clock Tuesday morning to the First Evangelical Reformed church where it will lie in state until 1:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon when the funeral services will be held. Dr. D.A. Bode will officiate. Burial will take place in Pilger Ruhe cemetery.
