Additional: Former New Bremen resident Virgil H. Schnelle, 82, 3301 E. Ila Drive, Muncie, Ind., died at noon Aug. 6 at Ball Memorial Hospital, Muncie, Ind. He was born Oct. 28, 1917, in New Knoxville, to Henry and Edna (Eschmeyer) Schnelle. He was married to Vivian Grothaus, who is deceased. He then married Janet C. Schnelle, who survives. Other survivors are two daughters and their husbands, Jenine and Ron FAnning, Celina, and Neva and Jim Rowen, St. Marys; two stepdaughters and their husbands, Darlene and Richard Weiss, Gig Harbor, Wash., and Carolyn and Terry Lang, Muncie, Ind., and two stepdaughters, Cheryl Feeney and Nancy Miller, both of Muncie, Ind.; three stepsons and their wives, David and Becky Dixon, Muncie, Ind., John and LeAnn Dixon, Spartansburg, S.C., and Robert and Sally Dixon, Cary, N.C.; two brothers, Kermit of Waynesfield, and Norman of New Knoxville; four grandchildren and 19 stepgrandchildren. Deceased are a brother, Myron, two sisters, Zippora Aufderhaar and Alfrieda Vohs, and a grandchild. He was a retired supervisor at Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., St. Marys, and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He received a Purple Heart, the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with three Bronze Stars and the Good Conduct Medal. He was a member of United Church of Christ and American Legion Post 241, both of New Bremen, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9289 and Fraternal Order of Eagles Lodge, both of St. Marys. Services are at 1 p.m. Thursday at Gilberg Funeral Home, New Bremen, the Rev. John W. Tostrick officiating. Burial with military rites conducted by VFW and American Legion is at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens, St. Marys. Calling is at 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Contributions can be made to the church's memorial fund.
