Additional: Lester R. Howe, 63, 500 E. Front St., died of an apparent heart attack in the emergency room at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital at 1:23 p.m. Tuesday, March 28, 1989. He had been transported to the hospital from his residence by the New Bremen Emergency Squad. He was born Nov. 29, 1925 in Botkins to Henry and Sarah (Huelsmeyer) Howe. On Feb. 9, 1946, he married Doris Waterman, who survives. He is also survived by a daughter, Mrs. Thomas (Nan) Scheib, New Bremen; a son, Keith, New Bremen; three grandsons; two sisters, Mrs. Erma Grieves, Wapakoneta Manor Nursing Home, Wapakoneta, Mrs. Harry (Dorothy) Ingram, Minster; and a brother, Donald, New Knoxville. He was preceded in death by a sister, Elda Funk, and two brothers, Virgil and Harold. Mr. Howe was a U.S. Navy hospital corpsman during World War II. He was a member and a past commander of American Legion Post 241 and a member of the legion's 40 and 8 Club in Wapakoneta. He was an avid bowler and coach for the American Legion District 2 baseball team, based in Lima. He retired in 1985, having last taught machine trades at Apollo Joint Vocational School, Lima. He had also worked part time at Reliable Products, St. Marys. He was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ and had been president of the church. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the church with the Rev. Dr. Wade J. Schemmel officiating. Burial will be in German Protestant Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m Thursday at Gilberg Funeral Home and at the church Friday after 11 a.m. The American Legion Post will hold a services at the funeral home at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. The preferred memorials are to the church building fund and the New Bremen Emergency Squad.
