Additional: Raymond G. Zunk, 74, 156 Watercrest Drive, St. Marys, died at 12:55 p.m. Monday, Feb. 12, 2001, at his home following a long illlness. He was born Jan. 29, 1927, in Benton, Ottawa County, the son of Fred and Bernice (Banky) Zunk. On July 22, 1950, he married Mary Cogan, who died May 12, 1994. Then on Feb. 4, 1995, he married Helen Schelby, who survives. Survivors include three sons, Lyle Zunk of Palmyra, Ind., Randy (Deborah) Zunk of Boca Raton, Fla., and Keith (Mary) Zunk of Dayton; a daughter, Tamara Karant of Akron; a brother, Rusty (Davene) Schimmel of Toledo; two stepdaughters, Janie Goodwin of St. Marys and Gayle Sachs of Dayton; a stepson, Ron MIars of St. Marys; 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a stepson, John Miars. Mr. Zunk, formerly of Fairborn, was a well-known Ohio historian who gave many lectures across the state about Ohio history, speaking at colleges, schools service clubs and historical societies. He was retired from the City of St. Marys electric plant, where he was a stationary engineer. He was a graduate of Rocky Ridge High School in Ottawa County and then joined the Merchant Marine. He then enlisted in the U. S. Coast Guard, serving during World War II. He was also a graduate of Clark Technical College. Mr. Zunk was active in several philantalic (Stamp collecting) societies and clubs around Ohio, and he was an American Philantalic Certified National Judge. He was historian of the Miami -Erie Canal Society. He was past president of the Ohio Postal History Society was awareded the DeWitt Clinton National Canal Preservation Award. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Miller Funeral Home in St. Marys with the Rev. Laurence Feaver officiating. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memory Gardens near Moulton. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, where memorials may be directed to the donor's choice.
