Additional: Donald V. Wellman, 80, 127955 Ohio 29, New Knoxville, died at 1:15 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 23, 2000, at the Wapakoneta Manor Nursing Home in Wapakoneta. He was born March 15, 1920, in Washington Township, Auglaize County, near New Knoxville, to Conrad and Alvina (Holtkamp) Wellman. On May 16, 1941, he married Louise F. Ruese, who died Oct. 19, 1999. Survivors include two daughters, Kay Wellman of Elida and Kathleen (Jay) Elshoff of St. Marys; one son, John Wellman of St. Marys; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one brother, Eldred "Bud" Wellman of New Knoxville; and one sister-in-law, Lucille Schwabero of New Knoxville. He was preceded in death by one son, Vernon D. Wellman; one daughter, Katherine A. Wellman; and one brother Robert Wellman, who died in infancy. Mr. Wellman was a member of the First United Chruch of Christ in New Knoxville, where he was a former deacon of the church and former Sunday School superintendent. He was a former board member and a past president for the New Knoxville Public Schools. He served on the New Knoxville Village Council and was a former mayor of New Knoxville. Mr. Wellman served with the U.S. Army Air Corp. during World War II. He was a member of the American Legion Post 444 in New Knoxville. He retired in 1979 after 40 years with the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company in St. Marys. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Gilberg Funeral Home in New Bremen with the Rev. David Hunt officiating. Burial will follow at Pilger Ruhe Cemetery in New Knoxville. The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Rita's Hospice in Lima or to the First United Church of Christ Radio Fund.
