Additional: Thomas A. Vanderhorst, 78, of St. Marys, died at 3:10 a.m. Nov. 6 at Otterbein Retirement Community, St. Marys, following an extended illness. He was born April 23, 1923, in Minster, to Harry and Clara (Schrimpf) Vanderhorst. On Oct. 24, 1942, he married Edna Schwieterman and she survives. Also surviving are a son and his wife, Jim and Kris of St. Marys, and a son, Tom of Annapolis, Md.; two daughters and their husbands, Carol and Ron Jones, New Bremen, and Theresa and Dennis Seewer, St. Marys, and a daughter, Jane of Cincinnati; two brothers, Dick of Knoxville, Tenn., and Jerry of St. Marys; 15 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Deceased is a brother, Harry. He was the retired owner and operator of Vanderhorst Cannery, St. Marys. He was a 1940 graduate of Memorial High School, St. Marys, and a U.S. Navy veteran. He had served on the board of directors of Home Banking Co. and the Joint Township District Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees, both of St. Marys, and as a St. Marys Township trustee. He was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, a member and past grand knight of Knights of Columbus Council 1592, and a member of American Legion Post 323 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, all of St. Marys, and the Ohio Canners Association. Funeral Mass is 11 a.m. Thursday at the church, the Rev. David A. Heinl officiating. Private burial services will be at Gethsemane Cemetery, St. Marys. Calling is 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. today at Miller-Long & Folk Funeral Home, St. Marys. Contributions can be made to the Joint Township Foundation or the Otterbein Tree of Hope.
