Additional: The subject of this notice was one of the heroes of the ill-fated Greely expedition to the north and was well known in this county, having resided for several years in St. Marys. He died last Wednesday at his home in Indianapolis from a protracted illness due to the hardships he was forced to undergo in the far north. The immediate cause of his death was a cancerous growth which closed up completely his digestive organs. Sergeant Fredrick had one of the most adventurous careers in the history of the United States army and navy. He was born at Dayton, Ohio on July 21, 1853 and spent the early years of his life in that city, subsequently following the family's fortunes to St. Marys. Here his mother died, the home was broken up and young Frederick, then only thirteen years old and without a dollar in his pocket went to Chicago, where he began life as a messenger boy. After several years fighting against adversity in the big city, he finally joined the regular army and eventually became part of that historical trip to the far north. Upon the return of the Greely expedition he was mustered out of the service and given a position in the meteorelogical bureau and was a few years ago raised to a first lieutenant and put on the retired list of the army with all the pay and allowances of such an official. He has frequently visited this county since he has been located at Indianapolis and has many good friends who admire his character aside from the traits which made him famous.
