Additional: Alvena Marie Elsass, 86, Botkins, died at 1:20 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, at The Pavilion in Sidney. She was born Oct. 19, 1914, in Clay Township, Auglaize County, the daughter of Adam G. and Armeda (Rash) Helmlinger. On Jan. 16, 1936, she married Raymond E. Elsass, who died Aug. 17, 1987. Survivors include a daughter, Yvonne (Max) Smith of DeGraff; a son, Daniel (Pamela) Elsass of Charlotte, N.C.; two grandsons, Kenneth (Rebecca) Elsass of Gaithersburg, Md., and Jarrod (Gretchen) Elsass of Franklin, Va.; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by five brothers and five sisters. A homemaker, Mrs. Elsass worked with her husband on the family farm. She was a 63 year member of St. Jacob Lutheran Church in Shelby County and its Church Women United. She was a Sunday School teacher for more than 40 years and served as stewardship chairperson for more than 20 years. In 1948, she started the Junior Mission Band, now known as the Junior Lutherans, and chaired many programs and projects. She was a member and treasurer of the Botkins Senior Citizens and a member of the Sidney Senior Citizens. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the St. Jacob Lutheran Church with the Rev. Milo A. Strozensky officiating. Burial will follow at the Greenlawn Cemetery in Wapakoneta. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. today at the Bayliff & Eley Funeral Home in Wapakoneta. The body will lie in state for one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the church. Memorials may be directed to the St. Jacob Lutheran Church or to a charity of the donor's choice.
