Additional: New Bremen—Herbert Anthony Berning, 51, 305 South Washington Street, died at 9:45 p.m. Monday, in Joint Township Memorial Hospital, St. Marys, where he had been a patient for the past ten days. He had been ill for a period of two months. Mr. Berning was a member of the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church and of the Holy Name Society of that church. He was an employee of Crown Controls in New Bremen. Mr. Berning was born on January 6, 1914, east of Minster in Shelby County, to the late Herman and Catherine Huecker Berning. On December 23, 1936, he married the former Dorothy Howe, who survives. Mr. Berning also is survived by seven children; James Berning, Fort Loramie; Mrs. Don (Lois) Dicke, New Bremen; Miss Norma Berning, Dayton; Mrs. Ronald (Marlene) Hittepole, New Bremen; Mrs. Ray (Joanne) Meckstroth, Fairfield, Calif.; Mrs. Kermit (Barbara) Freewalt, St. Marys, and Stanley Berning at home; ten grandchildren; four brothers: Ray and Richard Berning, both of New Bremen, and Elmer and Henry Berning, both of Botkins; four sisters: Mrs. Walter (Angela) Topp, New Bremen; Mrs. John (Alma) Davis and Mrs. Roy (Linda) May, both of St. Marys, and Mrs. Ferd (Viola) Bruns, Mendon, and one half-brother, August Kohne, Minster. One brother preceded him in death. Final absolution will be given at 10 a.m. Thursday at the church with Father Carl G. Will officiating. Burial will follow in the German Protestant Cemetery. Friends may call at the Gilberg Funeral Home after noon on Wednesday, until the time of the services on Thursday. The Holy Name Society will meet at the funeral home for prayer at 8 p.m. Wednesday. Those who wish to may contribute to the Cancer Fund. A funeral mass will be read at 10 a.m. Monday in the church.
