Information: Dec. 1876
One by one the old Pioneers are passing over the dark river.
Tuesday for the second time within a week, the public of this
town and vicinity were called together to do the last mortal
honors to the remains of an old and respected citizen. John
Hawthorne, commonly known as "Uncle Johnny," was
born in the county of Down, Ireland, in the year 1790. In the
year 1810 he became a member of the Presbyterian church of
that country and was also made a Master Mason in the same
year. He emmigrated to this country and settled in
Pennsylvania in 1811. In 1816 he moved to Piqua, Ohio and in
1824 removed to this place and settled on the old farm now
the residence of his son-in-law, William BARRINGTON, a short
distance south of town. In his death the Presbyterian church
loses the last one of its old male members. The Masonic
Fraternity loses its oldest member in the State of Ohio and
most probably in the United States; he having been a Master
Mason for about 66 years. The town and country lose one who
during a long and active life, has done much toward building
up and developing the resources of this country. But few of
us in our pleasant home realize how much we owe to the old
pioneers of this country. None but those who have had a
similar experience can realize the loss of his fatherly and
grand-fatherly care to his children ad grandchildren. The
attendance at the funeral services at the Presbyterian church
was one of the largest ever witnessed in this place, many
Brother Masons of Wapakoneta, Celina, Bremen, and other
places being present. The services by the pastor, Rev. C.C.
Herriot, assisted by Rev. A.M. Schultz and Rev. Mr. Wyant
were conducted in a very solemn and affecting manner and we
were again impressively reminded that our days are fast
fleeting away and though by reason of strength they be four
score years, still is their strength, labor and sorrows.

Information: Departed from this life on Friday eveining, Jan
6, 1877, Dr. R.W. Stearns, age 67 years, 6 months and 14
yeas. Again we are called upon to record the death of one of
our oldest citizens, who has won for himself an obituary
unimpeachable. Mr. Stearns was one of those whole-souled,
jovial, Christian gentlemen who was beloved by everybody. He
has suffered almost a year with a cancer in the stomach,
which caused pain that cannot be told of, yet, through it all
he never murmured, always saying that the Lord's will was his
and in His good time He would take him to that blessed land
on high, where sickness and sorrow never enters, but where
all is joy, peace and love. Dr. Stearns was born in Rutland,
Meigs county, Ohio, June 21, 1809, was married to his now
bereaved widow Nov. 3, 1835. United with the M.E. church 36
years ago. In his family he was all that a father could be,
always ready to wait on his children in a kind way. In the
community he was always ready and willing to lend a helping
hand to the poor and needy. In the church he will be greatly
missed. For 36 years he has striven to build up Christ's
kingdom here on eath, but now he is numbered with the blood-
washed throng in heaven. Let us all try to live as he had,
and at last gain that home in heaven prepared for those who
follow Christ. Dr. Stearns was a member of the Odd Fellows
Order. The members of the Order of this place, Wapakoenta,
New Bremen Spencerville, Deep Cut, Celina and other places
were present to help pay the last respects due a friend and
brother.

Obituary /
Additional Information: On Saturday, Jan. 27, 1877, at his
residence in Cincinnati, Ohio, John F. Bosche, aged 68 years.
The news of Mr. Bosche's death cast a gloom over our
community. But three or four weeks ago he was in St. Marys
and seemed to be enjoying good health. By this we see that we
know not the day nor the hour, when the Son of Man cometh. We
should feel that it is our duty to prepare for death for we
cannot tell when we shall be called before the great Judge on
high. Mr. Bosche was for many years one of our most
influential citizens and did all in his power to build up the
town. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Mr. --, of
Cincinnati, assisted by Dr. Rahsteiner, of this place from
the residence of Mr. B.A. WENDLE. The services were very
impressive. A great many of his friends and relatives from
Cincinnati, Toledo, New Bremen, Wapakoneta and other places
were present. The funeral was one of the largest ever held in
Saint Marys. He was buried in Elm Grove cemetery, Rest his
soul. Mrs. Ed. BURNETT and her son, Mark were in town
Tuesday, attending the funeral of Mr. J. Bosche.

Obituary / Additional Information: On Friday last (1-26-
1877) a little son of Mr. Richard Barrington, aged about five
years. The little fellow had suffered for about a year. After
his death an examination was made and it was found that his
body were diseased in almost every way. His liver and stomach
were larger that they should have been for a grown person .
It surely was a great relief to the little lad when life
ended. The parents did everything in fheir power to restore
their loved one to health, but all to no avail. The parents
should be reconciled to the will of God, knowing that He does
all for the best. The funeral took place on Saturday in the
Baptist church and was largely attended. Rev. Wynant preached
an able sermon form the text, "Suffer the little
children to come unto Me and forbid them not, for of such is
the kingdom of heaven."
