DEAD FROM INJURY AT 85
Venerable Retired Court House Engineer Passed Away Tuesday
Evening
Alois Herbst, 85, one of the city's best known elderly
citizens who retired in
1930 after 35 years service as heating engineer at the
Auglaize county court
house, died at 9:05 Tuesday evening at his residence, 112
West Harrison street.
Mr. Herbst had been in his usual good health until ten days
ago when he fell
while walking on Harrison street near the Harrison street
bridge. His pelvis
bone was fractured and the resulting complications resulted
in his death last
night.
Mr. Herbst was a native of Germany , having been born in
Wuerttemburg on
March 1, 1852. His parents, Alois and Barbara Herbst brought
him at the age of
two years to America and the family established itself in
this city where he
has spent the remainder of his life. After several years
employment in the
local industries, he became the engineer of the first stream
driven fire engine,
the old steamer that in the 1880's supplanted the hand pumper
of the volunteer
firemen's organization. After seven years as a fireman he
became engineer in
the powerplant for the new court house, constructed in 1895,
and he continued
in that capacity until 1930, having charge of the heating and
care of the grounds.
He was an active and ardent Democrat and had served for
several terms as a
member of the city council.
On March 16,1873 , a few days after his twenty-first birthday
he married
Miss Amelia Schaible of this city. Of their nine children, a
daughter and two
sons preceeded the father in death. The widow, Mrs. Amelia
Herbst, and three
daughters, Mrs. Jacob Werner of this city, Mrs. Karl Roth of
Lake Forest, Illinois,
and Mrs. Sellers Cobb of Cincinnati, and three sons, John
Herbst, of Newton,
Iowa, Edwin Herbst of Mt. Carmel, Illinois, and William
Herbst of Detroit,
are left to mourn his death. His descendants include also 17
grandchildren and
ten great grandchildren. His daughter, Mrs. Cobb, was
visiting at the parental
home at the time her father was injured, and remained in
attendance until his
passing. Mr. Herbst had been a member of the I.O.O.F. lodge
until his infirmities
prevented him from participating in its activities. He was a
member of the
St.Paul's Evangelical & Reformed Church and had been
faithful in his attendance
there. He was a man of kindly disposition, interested in
community affairs,
and was widely esteemed.
The funeral services have been arranged for 2 p.m. Friday at
the St. Paul's
Evangelical & Reformed Church, the Rev. Richard J. Loew,
pastor, officiating.
Interment will be made at Greenlawn cemetary. Friends are
asked to call at the
residence to view the remains since the casket will not be
opened at the church.
