Minister: WILSON, George Title:
Years Served:
Church: Methodist Episcopal
Village:
Oshtemo, Michigan, Township: , County: Kalamazoo
County, State:
MI
Source: History of Kalamazoo County
Additional: -1853: History of
Kalamazoo Co: under The Methodist Episcopal Church (p. 135), "There is
but
one religious society in Oshtemo , viz.: The Methodist Episcopal.
Oshtemo
circuit was organized in the fall of 1853; George WILSON the first
preacher."
1857: From a researcher in Iowa--The Geneseo church had its centennial
in 1967
and in their history it says: "In 1857 P.L. She rman opened his home (a
quarter of a mile west of the present ch urch) for a meeting place for
the
Methodists. George WILSON preached. Soon they moved to the stone school
across
from the Sher mans. The church was built in 1867 & they have no
record of
who the first minister was."
Now in the History of the early settlers of Geneseo it says: "George
WILSON
formerly from PA, came from MI in 1867 & bought land on section 13.
By
profession he was a preacher, a cabinet maker by trade & a man much
respected
by all. He died at an early day (sic/age?) & the family scattered."
(Here the 1867 is wrong, should be 1857)
